Belarus parliament election Dates 2016
National parliament election Date: 11 September 2016
The 6th Belarus Parliamentary Elections were held on the 11 September 2016. 484 candidates competed for the lower 110 seats in the House of Representatives of the National Assembly.
The election deemed by the government to be valid in all constituencies and attracting the required number of voters, was dominated by the mostly pro-government independent candidates, who won 94 seats. The pro-government Communist Party of Belarus was the leader among parties, taking 8 seats in the Parliament.
However, the main story breaking the news after the elections was 2 candidates with ties to the Belarusian opposition getting elected to the Parliament for the first time in 12 years. One of them, Anna Kanopatskaya, is a member of the United Civil Party (UCP), a long-standing opposition movement in Belarus. Elena Anisim, the second candidate who is deemed to have links with opposition, was elected as an independent.

Electoral system of Belarus
The 110 members of the House of Representatives were previously elected using the two-round system. However, a new electoral code was introduced in 2013, abolishing the requirement for candidates to receive an absolute majority, effectively changing the voting system to first-past-the-post. All candidates are elected in single-member constituencies. However, if there is only one candidate, they are required to receive at least 50% of the votes cast (voters may also vote against all). Voter turnout in a constituency must be at least 50% for the election to be deemed valid.
In cases where the turnout have not been met or no candidate has been elected, repeat elections will be held
