Bulgaria National Assembly election Dates 2017

National Assembly Election Date: 26 March 2017

Parliamentary elections were due to be held in Bulgaria in 2018 at the end of the four-year term of the National Assembly. However, early elections will be held on 26 March 2017 following the resignation ofPrime Minister Boyko Borisov and the failure of Bulgarian parties to form a government.  Borisov resigned following the defeat of Tsetska Tsacheva, the candidate of his GERB party, in the November 2016 presidential elections. The official election campaign began on February 24.

6.Bulgaria’s voters go to the polls on March 26 2017 in ahead-of-term elections for the 44th National Assembly, the country’s unicameral Parliament.

7. It is illegal to make public exit polls while voting is underway. This applies to newspapers, news websites, television and radio stations. Whether this applies to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter or to personal blogs is disputed – the majority of readings of electoral law conclude that it does not – and the 2016 presidential election saw the CEC call on media not to use their Facebook pages to post exit polls throughout voting day.

8.In spite of electoral law saying that there should be voting machines at all polling stations as an alternative to ballot papers, there will not be, a belated bid to acquire 13 000 machines having failed.

Electoral system of Bulgaria

The 240 members of the National Assembly are elected by open list proportional representation from 31 multi-member constituencies ranging in size from 4 to 16 seats. The electoral threshold is 4%.

A total of 371 voting sections will be opened in 70 foreign countries and territories. The Central Electoral Commission announced that they will not provide polling places in 9 countries because of various reasons. These included Afghanistan, Iraq, Libyaand Syria due to security concerns, as well as Ethiopia, Indonesia, Mongolia, North Korea and Pakistan due to a very low number of submitted requests from Bulgarian nationals living there.
