Local elections Date: 1 October 2017

The Portuguese local elections of 2017 will take place in late September or early October of 2017. The elections consists of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner is elected mayor, another election for the Municipal Assembly, as well as an election for the lower-level Parish, whose winner is elected parish president. This last election will be held in the more than 3,000 parishes around the country.

Socialist Party Won in national municipal elections.

1. The Socialists took 38% of the vote and 157 town halls with 99.8% of counting completed.
2. Turnout was 55% on Sunday, compared with 52.6% at the previous local elections in 2013.
3. There are 308 municipalities and 3,091 parishes to be voted for in this local elections on the formation of Municipal Chambers, Municipal Assemblies and Parish Assemblies.

The latest opinion polls suggest the ruling center-left Socialist Party (PS) will win in Lisbon, with Fernando Medina Might continue as the Mayor

Polling booths close at 7 pm local time with the first results expected an hour or so later.

Electoral system of Portugal

All 308 municipalities are allocated a certain number of councilors to elect corresponding to the number of registered voters in a given municipality. Each party or coalition must present a list of candidates. The lists are closed and the seats in each municipality are apportioned according to the D'Hondt method. Unlike in national legislative elections, independent lists are allowed to run.
