The National Council (Narodná Rada Slovenskej Republiky) has 150 members, elected for a four-year term by proportional representation. Slovakia has a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments.

The electoral system of Slovakia
The President of the Slovak Republic is elected for a five-year term, and by popular vote since 1999. His role is limited, but not just ceremonial. The President has the power to nominate the Prime minister, to veto bills (unless confirmed by a two-thirds majority), and to nominate judges on the highest tiers of the judicial branch.
The President is elected through a two-round method.
For one's candidacy to be valid, the Constitution of Slovakia requires to collect 15,000 signatures of Slovak citizens or the support of 15 of the 150 MPs in the legislature. However, the office is limited to two terms.
