Theresa May takes charge as Britain's PM, Theresa May , New British Prime Minister, Theresa May's New cabinet, Theresa May cabinet members 

Theresa May is set to become Britain’s new prime minister Wednesday when David Cameron steps down after six years at 10 Downing Street because of his defeat in the country’s referendum on European Union membership.

May will be in charge of implementing the voters’ June 23 decision to leave the EU and strike an independent path.

May's Past Political Career:

  1. May is the second woman PM of Britain after Margaret Thatcher. The tough-talking leader took charge with a heavy workload already waiting in her in-tray after the Brexit vote.
  2. The 59-year-old Conservative party leader's first task will be to put in place a frontline team that can help her through the challenges of negotiating Britain's exit from the European Union, having promised that "Brexit means Brexit".
  3. May has been in British Parliament as MP for Maidenhead since 1997 and under outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron, she has been the longest-serving home secretary for Britain in 50 years.
  4. She has worked with the Bank of England in the past before entering front-line politics.
  5. May is expected to ensure stability for many roles, while putting her own stamp on the Prime Minister's office.
  6. Others in line for significant roles include energy minister Amber Rudd, international development minister Justine Greening, who recently came out as an openly gay minister, and home office minister Karen Bradley.
