Election Date: 18 November 2017

  1. Since current PM John Key has resigned Now the interim PM would have to be chosen.  Deputy PM Bill English to be most likely PM.
  2. The Governor General must issue writs for an election within seven days of the expiration or dissolution of the current Parliament.
  3. The last election was held on Saturday, 20 September 2014 and expires every 3 years. As a result, the 51st Parliament will expire, if not dissolved earlier, on Tuesday, 10 October 2017. Consequently, the last day for issuance of writs of election is 17 October 2017. The writs must be returned within 50 days of their issuance (save for any judicial recount or death of a candidate), which will be Wednesday, 6 December 2017.Because polling day must be a Saturday and two weeks is generally required for the counting of special votes, the last possible date for the next general election is Saturday, 18 November 2017.

  1. Resignation effective from 12 December, when National MPs will meet to select a new leader. 
  2. Key says he would vote for his deputy prime minister, Bill English, if he put his name forward for leader,

  6. His children, Max and Stephie, had suffered an “extraordinary level of intrusion” along with the opportunities that came with being New Zealand’s “first family”.
  7. Prime Minister John Key will resign next Monday.
  8. The National Party caucus will elect a new leader and Prime Minister before Christmas.
  9. Deputy PM Bill English will hold a press conference at 3pm.
