Bahamas General elections 2017 Results Dates Voting Opinion Poll

Elections in the Bahamas take place in the framework of a parliamentary democracy. Since independence voter turnout has been generally high in national elections, with a low of 87.9% in 1987 and a high of 98.5% in 1997. There has been two (2) national referendum's and one (1) opinion poll held within the last twenty (20) years. The first, held in 2002, it asked voters five questions ranging from changes to the constitution to the setting up of a national commission on teaching. The first opinion poll, held in January 2013, asked individuals whether they wanted to legalize online gambling. The second national referendum took place on June 7th, 2016, and asked voters four questions pertaining to equal rights within the Bahamas. All three (3) referendum's/opinion polls were rejected.

  2. FNM Deputy Leader Peter Turnquest has been speaking about tonight's events: “I am elated by the results. I am humbled and I look forward to serving for another five years and I am certainly committed to the further development of East Grand Bahama and improvements for the people. Overall, I think the margin of victory was very gratifying and humbling. I want to thank the supporters and constituents again for their trust.”

 

Bahamas General elections Voting Live 2017

  1. The country’s current Prime Minister Perry Christie and the governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) will face main opposition, the Free National Movement (FNM).
  2. Perry’s government has been dealing with a high crime rates, allegations of corruption; double-digit unemployment; scandal-ridden cabinet ministers; the falling apart of the mega Baha Mar resort deal, which has yet to open and recently, the PR nightmare following the international scandal of the Fyre Festival.
  3. There are just 180,000 registered voters out of 400,000 residents in the small chain of islands.
  4. 39 seats in the House of Assembly are up for grabs in the election. The party that wins the majority of the seats forms the government.

Electoral system of Bahamas

The Bahamas is a Constitutional Monarchy with a Governor General and a bicameral parliamentary system.

The lower House is made up of single member constituencies, the members of which are elected by universal adult suffrage, using the first past the post system. The Upper House is an appointed Body.

Eight candidates have been announced and include businessman Wesley Campbell (Englerston); former teacher Andrew Stewart (Montagu); contractor Obrien Knowles (Carmichael), businesswoman Annmarie Glinton Rolle (Seabreeze); businesswoman Lorraine Arthur (Centreville); businesswoman Denise Wilmore (Marathon); businessman Don Lockhart (Pinewood Gardens) and musician Leroy Butler (Mount Moriah).
