Early presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Uzbekistan on 9 July 2023.The early election was called after the approval of the constitutional referendum where term limits were reset and president Shavkat Mirziyoyev can serve two more seven-year terms.

  1. Polls have closed in Uzbekistan's presidential election, with long-serving Prime Minister and interim President Shavkat Mirziyoyev expected to score a comfortable victory in the ex-Soviet state.
  2. Uzbekistan has never had free and fair elections, and it is common for the incumbent to receive more than 90% of the vote.
  3. Polling stations in the country closed at 8 pm local time (1500 GMT) and 87.8 percent of Uzbekistan's more than 20 million eligible voters had cast their ballots, the Central Election Commission said on Sunday.
  4. The leaders of neighbouring countries have also openly supported Mr Mirziyoyev's candidacy.
  5. The commission will announce the results of the vote at 4pm local time (1100 GMT) on Monday, it said.

Polling stations opened in Uzbekistan at 8:00 am (0300 GMT) Sunday for a presidential election that is set to hand the incumbent Shavkat Mirziyoyev a third term as head of the Country

Around 20 million Uzbeks are eligible to vote in the former Soviet republic, which has been led since 2016 by Mirziyoyev, who portrays himself as a reformer.

  1. Polling stations at all 14 electoral districts opened their doors today at 06:00. 
  2. Elections shall be considered as valid, if not less than 33% of registered voters will take part in it. The candidate who receives more than half of the votes shall be considered as elected.

  5. In Sunday's election, Mirziyoyev faces three nominal rivals. Two of them, Hotamjon Ketmonov and Narimon Umarov challenged Karimov in past elections, each receiving about 3 percent of the vote.

According to article 96 of the constitution, when a president is incapacitated or dies in office the Chairman of the Senate (currently Nigmatilla Yuldashev) should take over as acting President, before an election is held within three months. In the event, however, Yuldashev stood aside, and parliament on 8 September voted unanimously to appoint Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev as interim President.
