Highlights Live Result Australia Elections 2016

  1. The uncertain outcome of Saturday’s federal election and chances of three years of minority government and paralysis on budget reform, can cause markets to crash and Australian dollar to sink further.
  2. Turnbull was pinning his hopes on mail-in and early ballots that traditionally favor the conservatives.
  3. The likeliest scenarios point to a slim coalition victory or a dreaded hung parliament, which could prompt yet another election.
  4. Smaller parties may have their say in government formation, NXT candidate Rebekha Sharkie, who won the party’s only lower house seat, may even have a say over who becomes prime minister should the election lead to a hung parliament.
  5. Xenophon, a former suburban lawyer who has served in the Senate since 2008, won 2 seats
  6. The Australian Electoral Commission said the ruling conservative coalition was leading in 71 seats, the center-left opposition Labor Party in 68 seats, and minor parties or independents in five seats. Counting was less clear in another six seats of the 150 in the House of Representatives where parties that control a majority form government.
  7. Australia's only minority government since World War II was led by the Labor Party from 2010 to 2013 when the coalition was swept to power with 90 seats.
  8. What Malcolm Turnbull said was " I’m sure that as the results are refined and come in over the next few days with all of the counting, we will be able to form that majority government. But, let me say this, let me say this without any fear of contradiction. The Labor party has no capacity in this parliament to form a stable majority government. That is a fact."
  9. Former minister Jamie Briggs has conceded victory
  10. Labor scents hung parliament
  11. Deputy Barnaby Joyce has won New England and, despite a 10 per cent swing against him, Tony Abbott has held Warringah.
  12. Early counting shows the party’s sitting MP, Scott Bucholz has more than 42 per cent of the primary vote with Labor’s Allistair Smith trailing on about 21 per cent.
  13. Victorian independent Cathy McGowan is looking comfortably ahead. The count is recording a 4.4% positive swing.
