South Sudan Presidential election Dates 2018

South Sudan Presidential election Date: 9 JULY 2018

General elections were scheduled to be held in South Sudan by 9 July 2015, the first since independence. However, in light of an alleged coup d'état attempt and continuing conflict in the country, this has been thrown into doubt, especially since no permanent constitution has been formulated. The South Sudan parliament voted in April 2015 to amend the country's transitional 2011 constitution to extend the presidential and parliamentary term until 9 July 2018, with 264 members in favour and a handful opposing it.

1.South Sudan has never had a national election. However, the most recent sub-national election was in 2010 for the presidency of the regional government of Southern Sudan and for the bicameral, 170-member Legislative Assembly.

2.In 2010, the South Sudanese independence referendum, 2011 was held resulting in a strong majority in favour of independence. This was despite difficulties and irregularities.

Electoral system of South Sudan

The people of Southern Sudan overwhelmingly voted for self-determination in the January 2011 referendum that gave rise to the world’s newest state, the Republic of South Sudan. With 98% voting for secession, this seemed the yearning of a lifetime, thanks to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that made this democratic exercise possible, among a plethora of other provisions. As the six-year-old CPA that marked an end to Africa’s longest civil war pitting the Khartoum Government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) lapses in July 2011, and formally giving way for the sovereigns in South Sudan to determine their future, the new political dispensation will pose opportunities, challenges and choices.
