A federal election was held on Saturday 2 July 2016 to elect all 226 members of the 45th Parliament of Australia, after an extended eight-week official campaign period. It was the first double dissolution election since the 1987 election. On 10 July, eight days after the election took place, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten conceded defeat, acknowledging that the incumbent Liberal–National Coalition would certainly be able to form a government, either in a majority or minority status. On 11 July, the ABC declared that the Coalition had won enough seats to form a majority government
